Let me put myself in your shoes for just one second. If you are reading this right now you are probably worried. You probably recently learned that you have contracted the herpes virus. Chances are its probably genital herpes and you feel terrible about it. I should know because I have been there. You probably feel embarrassed about it and wish you had never been so careless. I am not going to tell you not to feel this way because I felt that way and no matter what you read out there your inner judgement will try and envelope you with a feeling of guilt. Here are a few things I will tell you though:

  • One in five Americans (20% of the population) is infected with genital herpes; and
  • 20% of people infected with HSV-2 have no symptoms at all; 20% of people infected with HSV-2 have symptoms and know they are infected and 60% of people infected with the virus have symptoms but do not know they are infected with the virus.

What I am trying to get at is quite simple. You are not alone. Don't feel like there is this cross that you have to bear and that you are any less than any other person out there. The fact that you carry the virus does not define who you are. What it does mean however, is that you are going to have to be very careful when you engage in intimate relations with your partner.

In studies of transmission of genital herpes in couples, the annual risk of transmission averaged 5 to 10% per year for those abstaining from sex during outbreaks. What this means, is that if you protect yourself and abstain from sex during outbreaks, you have a 90% to a 95% chance of having a normal relationship. I am not going to get into the moral argument of whether you should tell your partner or not (for the record I think you should) because that is frankly not the objective of this review.

I tried a product called Choraphor. It claims to kill the herpes virus on contact. Medical studies and doctors claim that this is not possible. I am no expert on the topic, but after visiting several forums and reading the comments of people living with the virus, I decided to give it a shot. It comes in a little transparent bottle containing a blue liquid. As soon as I would feel an outbreak I diluted a q-tip with water and poured three or four drops directly on the q-tip. I would then apply it directly on the area where I would feel the outbreak coming up and place the q-tip firmly over it. When I had outbreaks, I would apply directly on the lesion. A word of warning for the faint of heart - this stuff stings. I mean it actually burns for a few seconds before the feeling subsides. Did it eliminate my outbreaks immediately? I would be lying if I told you it did. Here is what it did do:

  • Choraphor reduced the recovery time between outbreaks from two weeks to about two to three days;
  • Choraphor reduced the frequency of outbreaks with every application.

I have gone for approximately 6 months without having an outbreak and have been under prolonged periods of stress and lack of sleep on several occasions. I am not sure if the effects will be long lasting or if Choraphor has eliminated the virus from my system. What I am sure of is that it has made dealing with this virus A LOT EASIER. I have actually been able to have a normal relationship without transmitting the virus to my partner.

The Herpes Simplex Virus - The Culprit Behind Cold Sores

Do you suffer from cold sores or the herpes simplex virus? If so, you are certainly not alone. An estimated 100 million Americans have acquired the herpes simplex virus (HSV-1) which causes cold sores. These mouth sores can be a real pain to say the least. A cold sore is a small reddish or purple blister that is the end result of the herpes virus flaring up in your body. There are two types of Herpes Simplex Virus: HSV-1 and HSV-2. Let's take a look at the differences between the two and how they can affect you.

HSV-2

Herpes Simplex Virus 2 is the strain of the virus that causes genital herpes. Approximately 22% of American adults have HSV-2. What is even more frightening is the fact that two thirds of them do not even realize it and can be continuing to further spread the virus. It is spread by those who are having an active outbreak having unprotected sex with those who do not have it. With that said though, even having protected sex offers no guarantee that the virus will not be passed.

HSV-1

Herpes Simplex Virus 1 is the form of herpes that causes mouth sores. Because the herpes simplex virus is highly contagious, you should always avoid skin-to-skin contact with an open cold sore in order to avoid getting the virus.

Also, any kind of herpes virus is dangerous to newborns. It can easily be spread to the baby in the first weeks of life if he or she is kissed by someone with an active cold sore (oral herpes).

Early action in treating a cold sore during the initial tingling or burning stage may help in stopping the blister from forming, or help the cold sore heal faster once it has formed. They will generally clear up without treatment in seven to 10 days. Most people don't need treatment, since they go away on their own, but some over the counter medications can offer some relief. The key with these medicines is to begin treatment before the blister appears. If you wait until after it has already formed or broken open, it will be too late.

Keep in mind that cold sores are extremely contagious until they have completely healed and the affected skin has returned to normal. But even then there is still the possibility of spreading the virus for some time even after the skin has healed. If for any reason you don't see complete healing within 2 weeks, or it gets worse, talk to your doctor about the best way of treating a cold sore.

Female Genital Herpes

In Female, lesions may occur on or near the pubis, labia, clitoris, vulva, buttocks, or anus. Genital herpes usually appears on the external genitals, most commonly on the lips of the vagina (labia), and in the area covered by pubic hair. Genital herpes symptoms may also occur inside the vagina or on the cervix, and may not be noticed by either partner. Genital herpes may appear to be bumps, blisters, sores, cuts or redness.

Women are more susceptible to acquiring genital HSV-2 than men. On an annual basis, without the use of anti-viral preparations or condoms, the transmission risk from infected male to female is approximately 8-10%. This is believed to be due to the increased exposure of mucosal tissue to potential infection sites.

Unfortunately, there is no evidence that screening women to identify at-risk pregnancies (serologically negative pregnant women with HSV-infected partners) will lead to a reduction in neonatal herpes. To view more details about Screening in Pregnancy click here

To determine whether the symptoms you have just experienced are in fact a herpes virus, you can have two separate blood tests for herpes viruses, one for Herpes I and one for Herpes II. This will determine if herpes is present and which virus is active.

20% Of The Population Have A Herpes Virus

Herpes is a kind of viral infection. There are two herpes simplex viruses. Herpes Simplex type 1 (HSV-1) and Herpes Simplex type 2 (HSV-2). These viruses however look identical under microscope and both are capable of infecting mouth and genitals. Though the immune system of the body fights back against this menace, gradually the battle grows intense and as a result there are heavy losses by both the herpes virus and the immune system. Then the body becomes less capable of defending itself from attacks of other viruses.

After getting into a skin cell the virus starts multiplying. Then the skin becomes red, sensitive and soon afterwards one or more blisters or bumps appear. The blister opens, heals as new skin tissue forms. During the first outbreak the area is painful and may burn or itch. Flu like symptoms may also be common..

About 20% or over 50 million people are infected with genital virus in America. Each year millions of americans are diagnosed with genital herpes and young teens are found to be largely affected. Studies show that among every five American adults one is inflicted by the virus. Most of the people are unaware that they are affected by the virus.

Genital herpes is a contagious disease. The virus that affects the genital of men and women are characterized by recurrent clusters of vesicles and lesions at the genital areas. Herpes is a nuisance and it can make one emotionally traumatic. Herpes patients should try to keep the herpes virus under control. However, supporting the immune system should be the first target. Weak immune system is prone to outbreak.

Research is still going on for discovery of effective herpes vaccine. Though some vaccines like polio, small pox had been used to prevent the HSV occurrence, they had no effect. Now one has to depend upon the anti viral therapy. Isoniplex Isopinosine is used in 56 countries. It has an antiviral action and more significantly it has the ability to stimulate the body?s immune response. Certain drugs can reduce the frequency and duration of an outbreak. One can eliminate the risk of getting herpes by not having sexual intercourse with someone infected.

However if infected then the infected area should be kept clean and as dry as possible. This will help in the process of natural healing. Doctors often recommend warm showers in order to cleanse the infected area. Then the area should be dried with hair dryer. In order to prevent chaffing, the infected person should avoid tight fitting garments. Creams and lotions might be irritating.

A total approach to nutrition can be useful. There is no necessity of avoiding fat if it has a low lysine/arginine ratio and only a few milligram of arginine in it.

Can Genital Herpes Be Avoided?

STOP Herpes Now and From Coming Back for Good

Many kinds of diseases, especially sexually transmitted diseases (STDs) like genital herpes, can be avoided if a person is conscientious enough in practicing health habits. For genital herpes, the adage ?an ounce of prevention is better than a pound of cure? is appropriate. In fact, there is no vaccine against genital herpes.

Abstinence is definitely the most effective way of avoiding genital herpes and any other STDs. Having no sexual contact with anyone assures you that you will never be exposed to genital herpes.

However, abstinence can never be the choice of many people. And so, the next best thing is fidelity. It means that you must maintain a strictly monogamous relationship with a partner who has no genital herpes. This must be a two-way street. That is, you don?t have multiple sex partners, and your partner doesn?t maintain other sex partners. Having several sexual adventures may turn out to be nightmares in the end.

Unfortunately, finding one true love could be a trial and error process for some people. And so, to avoid genital herpes, the third best thing is being responsible. That is, you must practice safe sex.

Before starting a sexual relationship with a new partner, talk about STDs. It is probably not the most scintillating and romantic topic you could think of, but it is a vital one. Find out if your potential sex partner may have been exposed to the HSV virus. Having blisters and sores in the genital area and in the lips and mouth are hazardous signs. But you must also remember the fact that a person infected with HSV or any STD may never show any symptom. Thus, find out about your potential partner?s lifestyle, health history and sex history. If you are the 100th partner, think twice before consulting to a more intimate relationship. Prowess acquired due to experience may not always be a good thing.

Safe sex also means the use of condoms. Condoms, even if used properly, do not entirely prevent the transmission of genital herpes. But they do reduce the risk of acquiring STDs. Sometimes, the sores of genital herpes spread to the anus, the buttocks, and the thighs. These areas could not be covered by condoms. If your sex partner has genital herpes and the sores are limited to a small area, then either male or female condoms can be used. But let us reiterate that condoms do not offer 100% protection.

If pregnant, do everything in your power to avoid HSV infection, so that you do not endanger the health and life of your newborn.

If you are already infected with genital herpes, then have mercy and give others the chance to avoid your disease: avoid any sexual contact.
