Many people who contract genital herpes may not show any symptoms. Some may show mild symptoms that are taken as something else, while others may get severe problems. Genital herpes occurs in episodes. When you contract the virus, the virus travels to the nerve centers near the spinal cord. It travels back from there to the genital area and breaks out from time to time.

First Episode-

The first episode begins within a fortnight of contact. Some people get severe symptoms of herpes in this episode while others may get very mild symptoms of herpes during the first episode. The main symptom is appearance of lesions. You may see blisters filled with fluid or ulcers. The blisters rupture in to ulcers in few days and crust and heal within a month. The common areas are: on the vulva, penis, near anus, thighs, and inside vagina. Commonly women get more severe symptoms then men. If women get blisters in the vagina, cervix or urethra they may take it as something else. The symptoms of urethra may be treated as urinary tract infection. The symptoms of the vagina or cervix may be treated as yeast infection, if they are also accompanied by a discharge. If a woman repeatedly gets such symptoms, she should get herself checked for herpes. Blisters in the urethra of men may also be misdiagnosed by the patient. One should keep watch over any such symptoms after having unprotected sex.

Painful urination and headache may also occur during the first episode. Some patients also show flu-like symptoms during the first episode. Those who get mild symptoms may take them as insect bites, rashes, ringworm, etc. As these symptoms resolve soon, people are left unaware of the fact that they have herpes.

Recurring Episodes-

Most often the recurring episodes are far milder than the first episode. While some may have up to eight episodes in a year, others may have only one or two episodes. The recurrence depends upon the triggers of herpes. Certain factors trigger herpes. If you are careless about them you may get more recurrences.

In the next episodes, the symptoms of genital herpes may appear like: ingrown hair, insect bites, pimples, spots, etc. If blisters form, they crust over in few days and resolve. Most of the following episodes resolve much quickly than the first episode. Symptoms mimicking hemorrhoids may also appear on the anus. If you get repeated fissures or any other symptoms near or on the genitals, you should get screened for genital herpes. On average, a person having genital herpes from HSV2 may have three to four episodes of recurrence every year. Many times, despite the virus being active near the genitals, one may show no symptoms. But during this phase the person sheds the virus. That is called asymptomatic shedding.

Prodrome phase-

Prodrome is the early symptom that indicates that a disease attack is imminent. Many people feel some pain, tingling or itching before active onset of genital herpes. Within a day or two, lesions appear on the affected area. Once you recognize the prodrome, you should begin your medicines to reduce the intensity and duration of the attack.

Genital herpes is treated with oral anti-viral medications. There are many medications available for herpes. They all reduce the intensity of the attack. No medicine cures herpes. The choice of medication depends upon factors such as- the first episode, subsequent episodes, suppressive therapy, compromise of immune system etc. Your doctor may adopt episodic or suppressive therapy. In episodic therapy, your doctor will give you medicine whenever you have an episode of genital herpes. In suppressive therapy, anti-viral medication is continued to suppress any outbreak of herpes. Let us discuss about them.

Episodes - the first episode may be the most difficult one. The medication choice a, strength and duration will therefore depend upon the intensity. In subsequent episodes, the strength may be reduced depending upon the intensity of the outbreak.

Suppressive therapy-

Some people get frequent outbreaks of herpes. To stop this, you may be prescribed suppressive therapy. In suppressive therapy you would take medication daily for a long period and your doctor will monitor you about any change needed in therapy.

Herpes during pregnancy- pregnancy makes women more vulnerable to herpes outbreaks. Most of the women who are carriers of herpes virus may get an outbreak during pregnancy. There is also danger to the yet to be born child if the mother delivers the child through her vagina that has active outbreak. This calls for regular consultation with doctors about the medication and method of delivery.

Immune system- some people have compromised immune systems. That happens in AIDS, regular intake of steroids, and other diseases such as blood cancer etc. Your doctor will judge your immunity and prescribe the medication accordingly.

The Herpes Simplex Virus - The Culprit Behind Cold Sores

STOP Herpes Now and From Coming Back for Good

>>  Instantly STOP The Bloody HERPES. Click Here <<

Do you suffer from cold sores or the herpes simplex virus? If so, you are certainly not alone. An estimated 100 million Americans have acquired the herpes simplex virus (HSV-1) which causes cold sores. These mouth sores can be a real pain to say the least. A cold sore is a small reddish or purple blister that is the end result of the herpes virus flaring up in your body. There are two types of Herpes Simplex Virus: HSV-1 and HSV-2. Let's take a look at the differences between the two and how they can affect you.

HSV-2

Herpes Simplex Virus 2 is the strain of the virus that causes genital herpes. Approximately 22% of American adults have HSV-2. What is even more frightening is the fact that two thirds of them do not even realize it and can be continuing to further spread the virus. It is spread by those who are having an active outbreak having unprotected sex with those who do not have it. With that said though, even having protected sex offers no guarantee that the virus will not be passed.

HSV-1

Herpes Simplex Virus 1 is the form of herpes that causes mouth sores. Because the herpes simplex virus is highly contagious, you should always avoid skin-to-skin contact with an open cold sore in order to avoid getting the virus.

Also, any kind of herpes virus is dangerous to newborns. It can easily be spread to the baby in the first weeks of life if he or she is kissed by someone with an active cold sore (oral herpes).

Early action in treating a cold sore during the initial tingling or burning stage may help in stopping the blister from forming, or help the cold sore heal faster once it has formed. They will generally clear up without treatment in seven to 10 days. Most people don't need treatment, since they go away on their own, but some over the counter medications can offer some relief. The key with these medicines is to begin treatment before the blister appears. If you wait until after it has already formed or broken open, it will be too late.

Keep in mind that cold sores are extremely contagious until they have completely healed and the affected skin has returned to normal. But even then there is still the possibility of spreading the virus for some time even after the skin has healed. If for any reason you don't see complete healing within 2 weeks, or it gets worse, talk to your doctor about the best way of treating a cold sore.

Herpes Research

Much research on herpes simplex has been executed over the years. Research on this virus continues to be carried out today, as well. Research groups hold clinical and/or laboratory studies to look into the disease pathogenesis of herpes simplex and the body's defense against it and to examine possible treatments for it. The herpes simplex virus is a good research topic as the immune response of the body to the infection has not been explicitly elucidated. Moreover, although there are effective episodic and suppressive treatment of herpes with anti-virals, a definite cure or prevention for it has still not been discovered or created. Once present in the body, the virus is not completely eradicated and outbreaks or flare-ups can still recur once the host is stressed or suffering from a compromised immune system. This challenge is a good starting point to study different herbs and concoct many drug formulations. Herpes simplex is also a good research topic as a good number of people are infected with it, thus new information about the disease has great significance. What?s more, research has discovered that the infection is associated with Alzheimer's disease and this finding definitely sparked more questions and required more investigations.

The herpes simplex virus travels along the nerve to get to the skin, producing damage and inflammation of the nerve along the way. What is interesting is that the infected nerve cells or neurons are not destroyed by the host?s immune response. Recent herpes research studies the role of CD1 and NK-T cells in fighting the infection. The study involves extensive laboratory work such as virus culture, in vivo animal work, tissue processing, fluorescent immunohistochemistry, microscopy, northern and western blotting, RT-PCR and in situ hybridization.

For possible treatments of herpes, herbs recently studied include Hypericum Mysorense and Hypericum Hookeranum, which were found to completely suppress the activity of the virus.

Herpes research was able to show the connection between herpes simplex and Alzheimer's disease. It was discovered that 2/3 of a synthetic protein resembling HSV-1 was similar to the structure and function of beta-amyloid, the agent that accumulates in the brains of patients with Alzhemer's. The viral protein was also found to twist in a similar manner as those found in the brains of Alzheimer?s patients. This finding points to the manner the herpes virus is acting. Further studies might provide an effective vaccine for the virus.

Herpes Relief

STOP Herpes Now and From Coming Back for Good

Relief from symptoms of herpes simplex symptoms includes simple practices, home remedies, herbs and medications. It is also important to keep stress to a minimum as stress can stimulate herpes outbreaks.

For quick relief of herpetic sores and blisters, it not advised to make use of over-the-counter ointments or creams unless recommended by a physician. Most of these ointments and creams may only exacerbate the symptoms by smothering the lesions and preventing them to desiccate. The cold sores must be kept clean and dry at all times. They should be thoroughly cleaned with soap, salt water or bicarbonate of soda. They should not be opened or skinned with fingernails or any other sharp instrument. Cotton underwear must be used to allow airing and tight clothes must be avoided. Others recommend drying of genitals with a hair dryer. Some people advise compressing the blisters with vinegar and tepid water for ten minutes twice a day to hasten drying of the blisters. To relieve pain, ice wrapped in a clean cloth or towel applied to the affected area for ten minutes and removed for five minutes is beneficial. Especially soothing are warm baths two to three times everyday. When going out, a non-stick dressing should be used to cover the lesions as sunlight aggravates the sores. Moreover, uncovered sores will be exacerbated by rubbing and open sores make possible viral transmission.

Herpes relief also includes improving the resistance of the sick person. Vitamin C and zinc are effective in hindering herpes outbreaks. Vitamin E relieves pain and shortens the duration of the symptoms. Beta-carotene reinforces the immune system and inhibits viruses. Lysine supplements are valuable in herpes relief as well as it deters the virus? activity. Lysine creams applied topically are also available. Lactobacillus acidophilus, the live microorganisms in yogurt, fight herpes as well. Foods to be avoided include those rich in the amino acid arginine such as nuts, chocolate, seeds, oatmeal, raisins, etc.

Home remedies for herpes relief include carrot poultice (grated carrot wrapped in gauze or cloth) applied on the area as it can accelerate healing, alleviate pain and lessen glandular swelling. Herbs beneficial for herpes relief include Solanum nigrum, olive leaf extract, lemon balm, lavender, hyssop, myrrh, sage, gentian, horsetail and many more. Drugs indicated for herpes relief include anti-virals, anti-inflammatories and pain killers.

Types of Herpes

STOP Herpes Now and From Coming Back for Good

>>  Instantly STOP The Bloody HERPES. Click Here <<

The two types of herpes virus are Herpes Simplex Type 1 (HSV 1) and Herpes Simplex Type 2 (HSV 2). These look exactly the same under the microscope, sharing 50% of their DNA. Both can stay dormant in the nervous system for life or may produce on and off symptoms in infected people. Both can be spread the same way (direct contact orally and genitally). Both types of herpes virus may not produce any noticeable symptom at all. The main difference of the two types is their preferred part of the body while establishing dormancy. Either type can infect mucosal surfaces in the oral and genital areas although generally, HSV-1 occurs in the mouth area and HSV-2 below the waist.

HSV-1 usually affects the lips and inside of the mouth. HSV-1 typically establishes latency in the trigeminal ganglion near the ears, thus symptoms occur in the facial region. Cold sores or fever blisters develop in the affected areas and it can spread to other parts of the body (e.g. herpetic whitlow affecting the fingers and herpes gladiatorum affecting the chest). HSV-1 is generally mild when it affects the lips, face and genitals but can be serious when affecting the eyes and the brain. Research estimates that 50-80% of Americans have this virus. Many people are not unaware that the two types of herpes virus can be transmitted anywhere and this lack of awareness contributes to the increasing number of HSV-1 genital herpes.

HSV-2 generally causes genital herpes. The virus rests in the sacral ganglion at the base of the spine and when activated, symptoms occur in the genital area. The lesions may be found in and around the vaginal area (e.g. vulva, cervix), on the penis, on the buttocks, around the opening of the anus and on the thighs. HSV-2 can be so mild it doesn?t produce any obvious symptoms. It rarely causes complications and spread to other parts of the body is very uncommon.

Herpes Transmission

STOP Herpes Now and From Coming Back for Good

>>  Instantly STOP The Bloody HERPES. Click Here <<

Transmission of the herpes simplex virus is via direct contact with the skin lesions of an affected individual or having sexual intercourse with someone who is infected. The virus is transmitted straight from the site of infection to the site of contact. Oral herpes, for example, can be passed on through kissing. Genital herpes can be contacted through vaginal and anal intercourse. Oral sex also results to herpes transmission.

The herpes simplex virus is easily spread when there is direct contact with the open sores or blisters (active herpes) but it may also propagate without any visible skin lesions (asymptomatic viral shedding). When a person infected with the virus starts experiencing prodromal symptoms such as itching or tingling, the virus is already present on the skin and it can already spread via contact with the affected part. Even without any apparent symptoms, herpes transmission may occur. People who are unaware that they have the virus may propagate the virus as viral shedding still occurs even without noticeable symptoms.

Herpes transmission includes self-infection when a person touches the affected area and spread the infection to other parts of the body he lays his hand on such as the eyes, fingers, chest, and so on.

A newborn baby may acquire the herpes simplex virus from his infected mother. It is important for a pregnant woman to make sure she does not have the virus. A doctor may request for a test to check for the presence of the virus as the woman goes into labor. A normal vaginal delivery is deemed safe when no virus particles are present in the birth canal and when there are no symptoms of the virus outbreak; otherwise a caesarian section is indicated to protect the baby from coming into contact with the virus in the vaginal area. Herpes transmission to babies and small children also occur when they are kissed by someone with cold sores as their juvenile immune system may not be able to fight off the virus.

Incredibly unusual ways of herpes transmission occur through contact with toilet seats, bath tubs or towels as the virus survives for a very short time away from the human host.

Female Genital Herpes

In Female, lesions may occur on or near the pubis, labia, clitoris, vulva, buttocks, or anus. Genital herpes usually appears on the external genitals, most commonly on the lips of the vagina (labia), and in the area covered by pubic hair. Genital herpes symptoms may also occur inside the vagina or on the cervix, and may not be noticed by either partner. Genital herpes may appear to be bumps, blisters, sores, cuts or redness.

Women are more susceptible to acquiring genital HSV-2 than men. On an annual basis, without the use of anti-viral preparations or condoms, the transmission risk from infected male to female is approximately 8-10%. This is believed to be due to the increased exposure of mucosal tissue to potential infection sites.

Unfortunately, there is no evidence that screening women to identify at-risk pregnancies (serologically negative pregnant women with HSV-infected partners) will lead to a reduction in neonatal herpes. To view more details about Screening in Pregnancy click here

To determine whether the symptoms you have just experienced are in fact a herpes virus, you can have two separate blood tests for herpes viruses, one for Herpes I and one for Herpes II. This will determine if herpes is present and which virus is active.

Herpes: A Quick Guide

STOP Herpes Now and From Coming Back for Good

>>  Instantly STOP The Bloody HERPES. Click Here <<

Herpes is a rather common viral infection that affects a lot of people. Basically there are two types: Herpes-Zoster and Herpes-Simplex.

Herpes is the title of a group of viruses that can cause quite painful blisters and sores. Genital herpes is caused by the herpes simplex virus (HSV), and is a sexually transmitted disease. This infection is normally spread by sex, but it can also be spread by oral sex, the reason being skin to skin contact. Unfortunately, recurrence of genital herpes is the norm rather than the exception. It is now estimated that more than 75% of all genital herpes is transmitted when there are no lesions and no symptoms present. The cold sore virus is another strain of herpes and is not associated with sexually transmitted disease; ocular herpes is not an STD.

Some symptoms are:

  Swollen lymph glands
  Headaches
  Blisters
  Itching
  Burning

Even after the active infection has gone and there is no remaining obvious infection, the Herpes infection has been known to reappear. Although it is quite rare, women in pregnancy can pass this infection on to their baby during or post child birth.

The type 2 herpes virus is the cause of the majority of genital herpes cases. Infections of the genitalia are normally caused by type 2 but may on occasion be due to type 1, especially in children. Another sort of herpes virus, Herpes (or varicella) zoster, can cause chicken pox and also shingles.

Before opting for a treatment for genital herpes, a health care provider has quite a few issues to think about. Treatment for the herpes virus will depend on the strain and stage of the virus. Some treatment with antiviral drugs can aid people who are cursed with genital herpes outbreaks remain symptom-free for a longer time. There is no known treatment that can cure genital herpes; the virus will always be present in your body. Herpes cannot be cured, however, there is some medication available today which can shorten the duration and severity of outbreaks.

An Overview to Genital Herpes in Plain English

STOP Herpes Now and From Coming Back for Good

>>  Instantly STOP The Bloody HERPES. Click Here <<

Genital herpes is one of the most commonly occurring STDs (Sexually Transmitted Diseases). It is caused by the Herpes Simplex Virus. There are two variations of the virus: type 1 or also referred to as HSV-1 and type 2 also commonly known as HSV-2. Type 1 which is the culprit behind the cold sores you might see people sporting on their lips and type 2 which is most commonly responsible for genital herpes.

Genital herpes has no preference when it comes to gender or age. It affects both men and women although HSV-2 does seem to have a higher rate of occurrence in women.

A person can only get infected during sexual contact with someone who is already infected. The most common way to transmit the HSV virus is thru sexual intercourse. Sexual intercourse can be vaginal, anal or oral sex. Most people have none to very minimal signs or symptoms from type 1 or type 2 infection. When signs do occur, they tend to appear as small blisters in the pubic and anal region of the person infected. These blisters break leaving sores that may take several weeks to heal. In most cases, the first outbreak is the most severe. Signs and symptoms during the first outbreak include flu-like symptoms, fever and swollen glands. Outbreaks tend to happen less often and less severe over time.

When a person has an outbreak, which means that the blisters are present, they are more likely to transmit the disease. That doesn?t mean that someone who is infected with genital herpes and doesn?t have blisters is safe. They?re not. Safe sex practices do need to be followed regardless of the presence of blisters.

The only real way to be diagnosed with genital herpes is by getting a blood test. When you are diagnosed with genital herpes you may view that as the end of your sexual life. It?s not. Many people live with this condition and enjoy active intimate lives. There are multiple sites dedicated to introduce singles with herpes for dating.

Some surprising facts about genital herpes that many people aren?t aware of include:

* Approximately 1 million people are infected with genital herpes each year.
* In the United States it?s estimated that 1 in 5 people are infected with genital herpes.
* Type-2 infections are more common in women than in men.
* Up to 90% of people who are infected with genital herpes aren?t aware of it.

In order to manage this condition, you do need to be diagnosed by a doctor. That?s the first step towards treatment. There is not an available cure for genital herpes but it can be managed by oral medication known as suppressive therapy. The medicine helps reduce the number of outbreaks you can experience but as time progresses, your body gets used to the viral infection and is able to fight is reducing the number of outbreaks.

If your partner confides in you that he or she may have genital herpes or you suspect that you may be infected, plan a visit to your physician as soon as possible. With the required knowledge in hand you can take control of your sexual health.

In order to manage this condition you do need to be diagnosed by a doctor. That?s the first step towards treatment. Although there isn?t an available cure for genital herpes it can be managed by oral medication known as suppressive therapy.

If you are a parent, you shouldn't wait to start talking to your children about genital herpes and do not expect their school to educate them about STDs. It is best to start educating your children when they are in their pre-teen or early teen years.

If your partner or child confides in you that he or she may have genital herpes or you suspect that you may be infected, plan a visit to your physician as soon as possible.

Genital herpes is an infection in the form of vesicular eruption caused by a virus; simplex-usually involving the mouth, lips, face (cold sores); zoster-infection of certain sensory nerves causing pain and/or blisters along the course of the affected nerve (shingles/zona); genitalis-lesions on the genitalia.

Around 50 million people in the world suffer from genital herpes and about 1 million people are infected each year. The best part is that many people even do not know that they suffer from the disease because they may not experience the symptoms.

If you have ever felt a burning, tingling or itchy feeling around your genital area, buttocks or thighs, or have noticed red open sores or bumps around the area, you may be one of the many people in the world who has herpes.

There are several medications for the treatment of genital herpes and acyclovir is one of the antiviral drugs developed for the treatment. These include acyclovir (zovarix), Val acyclovir (valtrex) and famciclovir (famir).

Acyclovir (brand name Zovirax) is the oldest of the antiviral medications. It has been available since 1982 in a topical form (ointment form) and sold since 1985 in pill form. Now acyclovir is available in a generic form.

It helps by reducing the replication of the viruses that needs to reproduce itself. Thereby it helps to keep the virus inactive. It is effectively used for the treatment of initial episodes and the management of recurring occurrences of genital herpes. Again, it helps in treating acute herpes zoster and chickenpox.

Studies show that these medications are quite safe and effective and rarely produce any side effects. However, certain side effects could be visible such as some allergic reactions, swelling in body parts, stomach pain or less production of urine in the body.

Negotiation Is The Path To Herpes Peace

STOP Herpes Now and From Coming Back for Good

You need to make peace with your herpes. I understand the instinct to want to fight herpes, to ?annihilate it? as one young man told me. I fought herpes for nine years and lost. I didn?t start winning my own personal battle with herpes until I made peace with it and with myself. You cannot win a war against herpes. Like Israel and Hezbollah or the Hutus and Tutsi or the Catholics and Protestants in Ulster you will have to find a way to peacefully co-exist. Herpes is for life, but how peaceful that life is up to you.

Negotiation is the path to herpes peace. Here are some rules of herpes diplomacy that I learned during my nine-year struggle. The same rules can apply when dealing with HPV or any other disease.

1. Treat your adversary with respect. Understand and recognize what herpes is and what?s its purpose in your body. You can review the chapter in my book entitled ?The Mystical-Magical Herpes Virus? for a refresher.

2. Be willing to speak and listen openly and sincerely with the virus. There is a visualization exercise in the book to aide in this.

3. Negotiate in good faith with the virus to come up with a win-win situation for your mutual benefit. The deal I stuck with the virus was this: ?I understand that you are in my body for life and I will stop projecting anger, bitterness and resentment towards you and in return I require that you conduct yourself like a well-behaved guest. If I treat my body well with the right diet and not allow myself to get too far out of balance you must agree to stay dormant?.

4. Practice Patience. Real peace agreements rarely happen overnight. Being impatient and anxious will show the virus that you are weak and desperate and will reduce your leverage in the negotiation.

5. Practice Perseverance. You must be in it for the long haul. You must have the commitment and stamina to see the peace process through. Whenever peace negotiations break down usually the situation on the ground worsens.

Peace is always better than war, especially a war you cannot win. With all the strife and suffering in this world, why not make your own body into a haven of peace?

Oral Herpes

Herpes, both oral and genital, is caused by the Herpes Simplex Virus. While oral Herpes is caused by HSV-1, genital Herpes is a sexually transmitted disease caused by the HSV-2 virus.

The common symptoms for both oral and genital herpes include the appearance of sores on the body. These sores appear on different parts of the body. In case of genital herpes, they appear on the genital area. In oral herpes, they appear on or in the mouth.

Most people infected with oral herpes are not even aware of the fact that they have the disease. This is because people usually don?t associate these blisters or soars with herpes. These soars usually last for a few weeks and then gradually dry out.

Oral herpes is an infectious disease that can spread by touching, kissing, or sexual contact. It is prominent amongst children because they pass on the disease to the non-infected children also.

Herpes can also be passed from adults to children through a simple good night kiss. Oral herpes is usually not frightening and can be controlled by treatment and preventive measures, but for a person with an impaired nervous system, it can prove to be fatal.

People can take some precautions to prevent further spread of herpes. Frequent and washing and avoiding touching infected areas are two good ideas. Also, remember that you need to take precautions with infants because their nervous systems may not be able to cope with the pressure of the disease. Adults with babies should avoid cuddling or touching them till the symptoms subside.

Oral herpes can be painful if people don?t take the necessary preventive measures. One measure is to take anti-viral tablets. Generally, herpes recurrence will not happen if you take medication. The other thing is people should try to remain stress free because higher stress levels prolong the disease.

Herpes, an infection caused by the herpes simplex virus, is estimated to be present in 50 to 80 percent of the American adult population. 20 percent, over 50 million people, are infected with genital herpes, also caused by the herpes simplex virus, and the majority of these cases may be unaware they even have it. Studies show that more than 500,000 Americans are diagnosed with genital herpes each year, and the largest increase is occurring in young teens. Some people are trying to self diagnose themselfs by using herpes pictures see: http://www.nicocure-guide.com/herpes-pictures , but the only right thing is to be diagnosed by specialist for right treatment. There is no cure for herpes to date. Supporting your immune system should be your first goal. A weakened immune system is more prone to outbreaks.Efforts to develop a herpes vaccine by biotechnology companies are ongoing. Until an effective herpes vaccine or cure for HSV infection is found, the prevailing approach to treatment continues to be suppressive antiviral therapy. Although there is no cure for herpes, some drugs have been effective in reducing the frequency and duration of outbreaks. It might be a good idea to discuss options with your doctor. During an outbreak, keep the infected area as clean and dry as possible. This will help your natural healing processes. Some doctors recommend warm showers in order to cleanse the infected area. Afterwards, towel dry gently, or dry the area with a hair dryer on a low or cool setting. To prevent chaffing, some people also find it helpful to avoid tight-fitting undergarments. Most creams and lotions do no good and may even irritate.

Equine Herpes Virus Attacks the Tracks

Maryland horses won't be accepted in Gulfstream Park or Palm Meadows Training Center. This was decided to protect other horses from getting contaminated of the equine herpes virus that is affecting some of these animals.

They won't be accepting horses that have been raced or stabled in Maryland since Jan 1st, 2006.

Pimlico Race Course in Baltimore is under quarantine. The Maryland Jockey Club announced that Pimlico is going to be closed until further notice.

The virus is also known as "rhino". The main symptoms of this illness are: upper respiratory infection and may cause neurological disease. Eleven horses have shown symptoms of the virus and two were sacrificed.

But this hasn't only affected Pimlico, at Laurel Park the decision has affected this week's racing card: on Wednesday for example, instead of nine races there will only be eight because the number of horses that have been entered for that day's program is less than 60.

Penn National, like most other tracks in the region, is not accepting Maryland horses as entries. It also is not taking any horse that has competed or worked at a Maryland track since Jan. 9.
