While herpes affects both men and women, the herpes symptoms in women are often different than those found in men. It is important to know what you are looking for, as the common herpes symptoms can be different in the different genders. This article focuses specifically on herpes symptoms in women.

Since men and women are obviously built differently, it is only natural that diseases will affect them differently, particularly those that affect the genital area. Women are four times more likely to contract herpes than men, simply because of their physical makeup. The changes in hormones during the menstrual cycle can also make a woman more susceptible to this particular STD. The disease may progress differently in women as well.

For anyone contracting herpes, the first outbreak is the worst. However, herpes symptoms in women can be far more extreme, particularly during that first outbreak. Since a woman has more mucus membrane in the genital area than a man, she can suffer a wider range of lesions over a greater area. This in turn causes more pain and discomfort.

During the first herpes outbreak, women are also more contagious than men. They can experience blisters not only in the genital region, but also on skin that is nearby, such as the buttocks. The result of this expansion of the disease means that it is even more infectious and causes even more pain.

Swelling of groin lymph nodes is another common herpes symptom in women, as is burning during urination. As if the lesions weren?t bad enough, these two extra symptoms add to the discomfort, particularly during the first episode. Some women experience further complications leading to meningitis which affects the brain.

Because a woman can experience lesions that are completely hidden from sight, within her vagina, it is quite common for herpes symptoms in women to be misdiagnosed. The herpes symptoms in women that are very different from the common symptoms found in men include pain in the pelvis and painful urination. These symptoms are all too often diagnosed as a yeast or bladder infection and the woman may be given antibiotics that do nothing against the herpes virus.

Herpes symptoms in women differ from those in men. Common herpes symptoms in women include pain on urination, pelvic pain, lesions or blisters on the genital area, inside the vagina and even the cervix as well as possible outbreaks on the buttocks and surrounding area. The disease can be much more severe in women, as well.

A Cure For Herpes? It's On Its Way!

Investigation is on presently for an effective herpes vaccine and there is a general consensus that something should be available in 3-5 years. But these vaccines will be limited in function as in they will prevent infection in new patients. Those with the herpes simplex virus already residing in their bodies will probably not benefit.

There have been attempts to make vaccines which will prevent the HSV occurrence, but with not much success unfortunately. GlaxoSmithKline Biologicals started a trial in November 2002 in this direction and hopefully, we should see some progress in the years to come.

Isoniplex (Isoprinosine) has been approved for use in HSV infections in about 56 countries due to its antiviral action and its ability to stimulate the body's immune response. In the United States, Isoniplex is currently under investigation and under trial for HSV primary and recurrent cases. There may not be any cure as of now but there are drugs that help reduce the frequency and the duration of an outbreak and your doctor would be able to give you a fairly good idea about your options.

You natural healing process will be aided by the fact that the area is kept clean and dry during an outbreak. Warm showers are recommended to clean the infected area, then gently towel dried or with a hair dryer on a low or cool setting. Avoid tight-fitting undergarments to prevent chaffing. Creams and lotions may only irritate so preferably avoid using any of these. But, at the end of the day it is a healthy immune system that is important in controlling the virus along with proper nutrition, exercise and rest.

Alternative solutions are being discussed today in which are enumerated two control methods: immunotherapy and antiviral therapy. Antiviral therapy is the development of drugs that can identify the cells that harbor the virus and distinguish them from the others. The drugs have to work in such a way that they destroy the virus completely, without leaving fragments or producing mutants that may resurface later inside infected cells. Basically what is being asked is that the antiviral agents must be lethal to viruses only and must be non-toxic to body cells. Immunotherapy deals with developing agents that help fight the virus naturally by stimulating the body's immune response system. Some substances available currently can activate specialized white blood cells.

The amino acid lysine has been found to control herpes and researchers have found that if free form lysine is added to a diet high in lysine and low in arginine, it appears to be useful. Viral replication increased in tissue culture studies when the amino acid ratio of arginine to lysine favors arginine. A higher ratio of lysine to arginine will suppress the viral replication and inhibit the cytopathogenicity of the herpes simplex virus. L-Lysine is seen to be an effective agent for reducing the occurrence, severity and healing time for HSV infection that reoccurs.

Food items that have more lysine than arginine are fish, chicken, beef, lamb, milk, cheese, beans, brewer's yeast and bean sprouts. Peas, gelatin, chocolate, carob, coconut, oats, whole-wheat, white flour, peanuts, soybeans and wheat germ are known to have more arginine than lysine.

An Overview to Genital Herpes in Plain English

Genital herpes is one of the most commonly occurring STDs (Sexually Transmitted Diseases). It is caused by the Herpes Simplex Virus. There are two variations of the virus: type 1 or also referred to as HSV-1 and type 2 also commonly known as HSV-2. Type 1 which is the culprit behind the cold sores you might see people sporting on their lips and type 2 which is most commonly responsible for genital herpes.

Genital herpes has no preference when it comes to gender or age. It affects both men and women although HSV-2 does seem to have a higher rate of occurrence in women.

A person can only get infected during sexual contact with someone who is already infected. The most common way to transmit the HSV virus is thru sexual intercourse. Sexual intercourse can be vaginal, anal or oral sex. Most people have none to very minimal signs or symptoms from type 1 or type 2 infection. When signs do occur, they tend to appear as small blisters in the pubic and anal region of the person infected. These blisters break leaving sores that may take several weeks to heal. In most cases, the first outbreak is the most severe. Signs and symptoms during the first outbreak include flu-like symptoms, fever and swollen glands. Outbreaks tend to happen less often and less severe over time.

When a person has an outbreak, which means that the blisters are present, they are more likely to transmit the disease. That doesn?t mean that someone who is infected with genital herpes and doesn?t have blisters is safe. They?re not. Safe sex practices do need to be followed regardless of the presence of blisters.

The only real way to be diagnosed with genital herpes is by getting a blood test. When you are diagnosed with genital herpes you may view that as the end of your sexual life. It?s not. Many people live with this condition and enjoy active intimate lives. There are multiple sites dedicated to introduce singles with herpes for dating.

Some surprising facts about genital herpes that many people aren?t aware of include:

* Approximately 1 million people are infected with genital herpes each year.
* In the United States it?s estimated that 1 in 5 people are infected with genital herpes.
* Type-2 infections are more common in women than in men.
* Up to 90% of people who are infected with genital herpes aren?t aware of it.

In order to manage this condition, you do need to be diagnosed by a doctor. That?s the first step towards treatment. There is not an available cure for genital herpes but it can be managed by oral medication known as suppressive therapy. The medicine helps reduce the number of outbreaks you can experience but as time progresses, your body gets used to the viral infection and is able to fight is reducing the number of outbreaks.

If your partner confides in you that he or she may have genital herpes or you suspect that you may be infected, plan a visit to your physician as soon as possible. With the required knowledge in hand you can take control of your sexual health.

Managing herpes

Herpes, an infection caused by the herpes simplex virus, is estimated to be present in 50 to 80 percent of the American adult population. 20 percent, over 50 million people, are infected with genital herpes, also caused by the herpes simplex virus, and the majority of these cases may be unaware they even have it. Studies show that more than 500,000 Americans are diagnosed with genital herpes each year, and the largest increase is occurring in young teens. Some people are trying to self diagnose themselfs by using herpes pictures see: http://www.nicocure-guide.com/herpes-pictures , but the only right thing is to be diagnosed by specialist for right treatment. There is no cure for herpes to date. Supporting your immune system should be your first goal. A weakened immune system is more prone to outbreaks.Efforts to develop a herpes vaccine by biotechnology companies are ongoing. Until an effective herpes vaccine or cure for HSV infection is found, the prevailing approach to treatment continues to be suppressive antiviral therapy. Although there is no cure for herpes, some drugs have been effective in reducing the frequency and duration of outbreaks. It might be a good idea to discuss options with your doctor. During an outbreak, keep the infected area as clean and dry as possible. This will help your natural healing processes. Some doctors recommend warm showers in order to cleanse the infected area. Afterwards, towel dry gently, or dry the area with a hair dryer on a low or cool setting. To prevent chaffing, some people also find it helpful to avoid tight-fitting undergarments. Most creams and lotions do no good and may even irritate.
