Herpes Simplex or HSV is the name given to the diseases caused by either of the two herpes viruses - HSV 1 and HSV 2. The most common misconception that exists is that Herpes simplex is only a sexually transmitted disease. This is only partially true as herpes can affect any part of the body and most commonly affects the mouth and the genitals. HSV is defined by clusters of small water blisters or lesions. Both HSV 1 and 2 can infect anyone through contact including and especially when body fluids are exchanged through kissing, touching or sexual intercourse.

The HSV 1 and the HSV 2 have almost identical DNA strains. The defining difference lies in their preferred area of infection. While HSV 1 typically affects the area around the mouth and the lips, HSV 2 is the most common cause of genital herpes simplex.

HSV infected patients suffer from cold sores which are the defining symptom of HSV. These cold sores or blisters are often preceded by a redness and itchiness around the infected area. They are also accompanied by flu like symptoms including high fever, headaches, cold or a sore throat. Genital Herpes is defined by similar symptoms but may also be accompanied by yeast infections, muscles ache, lower back pain and infections of the urinary tract along with high fever. Both types of HSV outbreaks are often preceded by warning signs called predromal signs of an outbreak. These include redness, soreness and numbness of skin in the infected area and swelling of the lymph nodes.

The herpes simplex virus is a stubborn virus which stays in the body once it finds its way there. Housing itself in the nerves, it causes recurring outbreaks of HSV. The first or the primary attack of the HSV is the strongest as at this stage the body has not developed antigens against the herpes simplex virus. Fortunately subsequent attacks are usually milder. Recurrent attacks will more often than not occur at the same place as the first attack did. Recurrent HSV out breaks can be triggered by stress, surgical trauma, lowered immunity, other genital infections and intake of alcohol. In women at times menstruation can bring on the HSV outbreak.

When an HSV outbreak occurs it is important to keep the area clean and dry. This will speed up the healing. It is possible to infect other parts of the body by touching an unaffected area immediately after touching infected parts of the body. Therefore it is very important to avoid touching the sores till they are completely healed and not just scabbed over. Hands must be washed with soap if sores are touched.

If predromal signs indicating a HSV recurrence are felt it is important to keep this are free from skin contact with other people to avoid spreading the virus. With Oral HSV patients should not kiss or share food and clothing with other individuals. With Genital HSV sexual contact should be avoided as soon as a recurrence of HSV is observed.

There is no known cure for HSV infections caused by either HSV 1 or HSV 2. However topical drugs along with some oral drugs may reduce frequency of out breaks and also reduce the length and intensity of the out break. Pain relievers and ice packs can also help reduce discomfort from the lesions.

3. Clean the infected area and keep it dry.

4. Avoid sexual contact until the herpes are healed.

During an outbreak, there are different ways to relieve pain.

- Take aspirin, acetaminophen, ibuprofen or doctors prescribed medicine to relieve pain and fever.

It is very important for a pregnant woman that the outbreak of the herpes should be treated before giving birth. If the mother is affected by genital herpes while she is pregnant, she is more likely to pass the virus to her baby. If the outbreak is not the first one, the baby's risk of getting the virus is very low. Babies born with herpes may be premature or may die, or they may have brain damage, severe rashes, or eye problems. Doctors may do a C-section to deliver a baby if the mother has herpes lesions near the birth canal to help prevent passing the virus. Also, acyclovir can help babies born with herpes if they are treated right away. It is not yet known if all genital herpes drugs are safe for pregnant women to take. Herpes is spread through contact with sores and can be dangerous to a newborn while breast-feeding if the sores are on sores on your nipple or areola. Breast-feeding should be stopped until the sores are healed.

Herpes Simplex virus comes from the Herpes Virus Family, called Herpesviridae of which two basic strains, notably HSV-1 & HSV-2 causes the infection. These are also known as Human Herpes Virus-1 and Human Herpes Virus ? 2 (HHV-1 & HHV-2). The infections are characterized by painful blisters filled with translucent fluids that appear on the skin or mucous membranes like the mouth or lips or on the genitals. There is nothing simple either about the HSV-1 or HSV-2 excepting that they prefer to become lifelong partners of the host on whose nerve cells they are permanently engrossed. From the outside, these blisters resemble those seen in chickenpox, the handiwork of another subfamily, VZV known as Herpes Virus-3 or HHV-3.

The infection may start with kissing (direct contact with lips) or through sexual intercourse (genital contact) when HSV sores are present or immediately before they appear, i.e. the Shedding stage. However, after the initial or primary stage of the infection, the virus goes into hibernation, remaining dormant within the cell bodies of nerves, innervating the area of original outbreak. After sometime the reactivation starts, when the virus is transported outwardly through the cell?s axon to the skin. And that?s when the blisters are seen. Though the infection is not fatal to adults, but yet if they are present during childbirth may lead to severe complications and even the sad death of the infant.

The primary symptoms of herpes simplex is burning, tingling or itching sensations near the edges of the lips or nose. This is known as the Prodromal stage. Thereafter, small, reddened spots develop in the irritated areas. And then comes the chickenpox-like blisters that are filled with fluid that often rupture, releasing a sticky serum-like fluid that rapidly crusts.

The strapping tendency of the virus to remain dormant within the nerve cells for indefinite periods gives it the characteristics of chronic nature. To begin with, none of the known antibiotics have any effect on viruses that come and go on their own and secondly, it becomes extremely difficult to dislodge them from the nerve cells where they are permanently lodged. However, the initial outbreaks after the exposure to HSV are more severe, compared to later episodes, since by then the body gets a chance to produce its own antibodies. Beware! The first outbreak often carries the risk of developing meningitis.

When an HSV infection appears on the lips in the form of a blister or sore, it is commonly called a ?cold sore? or ?fever blister?. However, it should never be mixed up with ?canker sore? because canker sores are not caused by the HSV virus.

Yes, it is. Especially when the carrier is producing and/or releasing, i.e. ?shedding? during an outbreak. Besides, like contact dermatisis, the disease can spread by physical contact during outbreaks. The normal human tendency of touching a cold sore and repeating the procedure on other spots on the face or neck may trigger further outbreaks. Touching an eye after the finger is wet with the fluid coming out of an open sore is extremely dangerous as it may affect the cornea and may cause blindness.

Investigation is on presently for an effective herpes vaccine and there is a general consensus that something should be available in 3-5 years. Warm showers are recommended to clean the infected area, then gently towel dried or with a hair dryer on a low or cool setting. Avoid tight-fitting undergarments to prevent chaffing. Alternative solutions are being discussed today in which are enumerated two control methods: immunotherapy and antiviral therapy. Antiviral therapy is the development of drugs that can identify the cells that harbor the virus and distinguish them from the others. The drugs have to work in such a way that they destroy the virus completely, without leaving fragments or producing mutants that may resurface later inside infected cells. Basically what is being asked is that the antiviral agents must be lethal to viruses only and must be non-toxic to body cells. Immunotherapy deals with developing agents that help fight the virus naturally by stimulating the body's immune response system. Some substances available currently can activate specialized white blood cells.

The amino acid lysine has been found to control herpes and researchers have found that if free form lysine is added to a diet high in lysine and low in arginine, it appears to be useful. Viral replication increased in tissue culture studies when the amino acid ratio of arginine to lysine favors arginine. A higher ratio of lysine to arginine will suppress the viral replication and inhibit the cytopathogenicity of the herpes simplex virus. L-Lysine is seen to be an effective agent for reducing the occurrence, severity and healing time for HSV infection that reoccurs.

Food items that have more lysine than arginine are fish, chicken, beef, lamb, milk, cheese, beans, brewer's yeast and bean sprouts. Peas, gelatin, chocolate, carob, coconut, oats, whole-wheat, white flour, peanuts, soybeans and wheat germ are known to have more arginine than lysine.

Maryland horses won't be accepted in Gulfstream Park or Palm Meadows Training Center. This was decided to protect other horses from getting contaminated of the equine herpes virus that is affecting some of these animals.

They won't be accepting horses that have been raced or stabled in Maryland since Jan 1st, 2006.

Pimlico Race Course in Baltimore is under quarantine. The Maryland Jockey Club announced that Pimlico is going to be closed until further notice.

The virus is also known as "rhino". The main symptoms of this illness are: upper respiratory infection and may cause neurological disease. Eleven horses have shown symptoms of the virus and two were sacrificed.

But this hasn't only affected Pimlico, at Laurel Park the decision has affected this week's racing card: on Wednesday for example, instead of nine races there will only be eight because the number of horses that have been entered for that day's program is less than 60.

Penn National, like most other tracks in the region, is not accepting Maryland horses as entries. It also is not taking any horse that has competed or worked at a Maryland track since Jan. 9.
